Cole Barnett... born and raised in Southern California, my interiors pair coastal comfort with a fresh elegance. I originally trained as a fine artist, which naturally led to a career as an interior designer.
My design style is...a fine and delicate balance of beauty, form, function, and lifestyle. My style is never pretentious and is always influenced by my world travels and growing up in California. My interiors are playful, yet elegant. I'm a fan of clean lines, organic textures, muted earthy tones, pops of color, metallic surfaces, and graphic wall treatments. My spaces feel cozy, inviting, unique, and calming.
I am... an interior designer, photographer, textile designer, animal lover, former 4th grade teacher, world traveler, trained dancer, wife, and mom.
I love...travel. Sitting at the peak of Wayna Picchu in Peru was one of the greatest moments of my life. The second was the day I spent at the hauntingly beautiful Prang Nang beach in southern Thailand. Acoustic guitar, specifically flamenco. Eating... eating in a foreign country is even better. Fashion. Literature. East of Eden, The Kite Runner, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, Tess of the d'Urbervilles are necessary reads. Islamic architecture and the gardens at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. History.
I believe...that when reading a design magazine, one should always start in the back. Burning candles, good music, a glass of wine, and a plate of delicious food are all part of the perfect environment. A home is not just about objects in a space. It is a collection of memories and the vessel for intimate and joyous moments. Everyone should own a proper camera and take proper photos instead of always using their cell phone. Designers are a means to their client's creative end.
My travel list includes...6 months in Spain, 6 months backpacking Europe, and 4 months in Japan. Thailand, Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Portugal, France, England, Germany, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Austria, Slovakia, French Polynesia, and Guatemala.
My guilty pleasure is... Cabo San Lucas (it's a direct, two hour flight from Orange County!). Red wine. Frozen yogurt with rainbow sprinkles. Glossy interior design and architecture magazines.
My cause is...working with the indigenous artisans in Latin America. Native Trade is a collaboration between the indigenous artisans of Latin America and me. The home decor line was born out of a dream to give back. Native Trade strives to provide stable work to families in indigenous communities and ensure that they can continue their ancient craft. I hope to one day open schools in villages where none exist and provide the children with education past early childhood. Click here to learn more about Native Trade.
Secrets about me... I graduated high school with a 4.5 GPA and in college I graduated Magna Cum Laude. I would give up my cell phone for one year to spend the day with the Bauhaus boys. I have three degrees: a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of San Diego, my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from CSULB, and an AA in Interior Design from FIDM, Los Angeles.
